Eddie is slowly learning what Eli likes.
Not with sex--Eddie knows what Eli likes during sex, knows how to read the signs that Eli wants this or that, homes in with fanatic certainty on what he is meant to do. Not with food, as Eli is an uncritical consumer of anything and everything, and unfailingly cleans his plate every night the same way he did when they were kids.
With clothes. Jewelry. Adornments. Eli likes long delicate necklaces, light translucent fabric, lace edging. Eli doesn't like rings much, even if they're narrow, or clip-on earrings, or anklets of the sort that teenage girls fasten around their tanned ankles before they go to the pool.
Eli likes creamy off-whites and vivid, electric blues. He likes crimson and fuschia and screaming orange, bright colors that aren't hard to make out in the dark.
Eddie comes home to Eli cooking, smoking in front of the stove even though he's trying to quit, wearing age-thin jeans and a threadbare undershirt. Eddie comes up behind him, buries his face in the back of Eli's neck, inhales the pleasant combination of sweat and fabric softener. Runs his hand down the small of Eli's back and under the waistband of his jeans, feeling lace stretched over Eli's hip.
"Almost ready," Eli says around the nearly extinguished cigarette, and Eddie hums into Eli's shoulder, fingertips dipping under the lace.
That night Eddie pushes Eli up against the wall in a pair of high-heeled sandals and a new butter yellow camisole. Sucks him off with Eli's hands twisting in Eddie's short hair, Eli's thighs tense and trembling.
